I almost have to laugh when I hear people talk about how much better things are because the "median wage" is going up. What a crock. If two people are working and one is making $1 and hour and the other is making $1000 an hour, well, I guess the median wage is $500 an hour. It's a BS argument. The median wage in america is going up, but that's only because the top 10% of wage earners in this country are making obscene wages while the vast majority are either out of work, working part time or are holding more than one job just to try to make ends meet. And a hell of a lot of people who do have full time jobs are making wages that don't even cover basic needs. The fact of the matter is since the 1970's, the real earning power of the middle class has either stagnated or declined. You can get verification of that from any government agency. If I recall my figures right, in 1970, the average CEO was making about 11 times the wage of the average middle class worker. By 2006, that average CEO was making 411 times the average wage earners income. The disparity between the top 10% of wage earners and the rest of the population hasn't been this lopsided since 1927, the year before the great depression. Let's see.......real wages dropping, unemployment at 10.2% as of this morning, millions of professional and high paying jobs leaving the country, the virtual elimination of a number of industries in this country, massive national debt.......and there are people out there who think we're doing just fine? Maybe we should pass a law outlawing kool-aid.

I don't know if you heard, but we're in a recession. Thats what happens during a recession, and does not reflect on the trend.
for the record, median=/=average
thats the mean
they are different things.

aesgisknight, have you ever worked or had a son depending on you to buy them shoes? the median age is determined with an average, that is skewed by large disparities in income. are these your own thoughts and experiences you quote from or are you repeating something you read in a book? miss jane Make Pot A Cash Crop.

I get it; you're poor.
median is NOT DETERMINED BY THE AVERAGE. I wish I had a stick so I can beat that into you. The MEAN is the average, the MEDIAN is simply the middle number.
lets say I have 5 people, they all make an annual living. All numbers in thousands
10 15 20 25 2,000
so the first person makes 10k a year, the second 15, ect. The last person makes 2 million dollars a year.
The mean (average) is 414k.
the median (middle) is 20k.
again, learn your goddamn math.
simpler terms: with the median number, half the people in the country make more than that amount, half the country make less. If half the country makes considerably more, it would not affect the median at all, but it would really mess up the mean. There is no math involved in finding the median, other than just going up the series and finding the middle numberMessage Edited by aegisknight on 11-07-2009 04:22 PM

Your argument still does not reflect the reality of the situation. If 100 people are making $5 an hour, 100 people are making $10 dollars an hour and 100 people are making $100,000 an hour, according to your argument, the median wage for the group would be $10 an hour. So what does that prove? That you can hide the true economic situation in the country by claiming that the median wage is high enough to make a decent living? It's a distortion of the true economic picture and the type of thing you'd expect to hear from some propaganda minister.

10 workers 8 of them $10,000 a year 1 makes $2million a year and 1 makes $8 million a year 10 people $10,080,000 average $1,008,000 a year. Those 8 mall food service workers fell the difference between 10 thousand and 1 million 8 thousand a year. thank you Prof. LaPorte Make Pot A Cash Crop.
